Get to hear some compelling stories and meet a wide variety of fascinating and amazing individuals (membership and staff). Build relationships and memories that will last a lifetime. The work can be intensely rewarding and lead to real positive societal change. Take part in actions and campaigns that can play a roll in history.

Cons

General lack of clarity around the long-term goals of the organization, which are so broad they border on unrealistic. Little to no management accountability. Inner office politics can be frustrating and exhausting. Workplaces can be incredibly toxic. Work/life balance is nonexistent. Taking time for self care is encouraged verbally, but frowned upon in practice. High burnout rate.

Pros

Exposure to the lower income and minority communities. Talking to real people with real problems. Having the satisfaction of helping folks register for citizenship

Cons

They will let you go without a moments notice. Much internal politics and dissent. If you fall out of line they will discipline harshly. They let some of us go because we applied for union status. Management will not side with the organizer ever. Work is sometimes worthwhile. Mostly doing the bidding of the big Whigs and getting people to vote Hillary, instead of focusing on real issues like $15 an hour, immigration, etc.

No support, overworked and underpaid, some managers are horrible.
