Pros

The multi-faceted nature of the business SGS does, provides ample opportunities to learn and advance. This is especially true for laboratory analysts and inspection personnel. There's less advancement opportunities for the personnel who work behind the scenes (HR, IT, Procurement, etc.).

Cons

Major layoffs in HR and other sectors create a climate where employees remaining in those areas feel that job security is not a concern of the decision-makers of SGS... Disparate systems that should be unified, (HR/Payroll/Accounting) are not. Personnel hired following a major layoff are thrown into a confusing scenario where they likely want to make a difference and create change but find it difficult to do so from their position in a massive company like SGS. Abilities within the procurement system should be less rigid for individuals that are not in Rutherford. The process of ordering non-catalog/capex items and getting vendors approved should be more streamlined. I believe the lack of available procurement personnel in Rutherford also has a negative effect on the efficiency of the system. Communication about major projects between management and "underlings" is severely lacking. Dissemination of pertinent information is not forthcoming and requires repeated inquiries before that information is provided. Updates to a project that affects many people and ultimately, the bottom line of a business unit, should be provided without being prompted by multiple inquiries. Health insurance should be better/cheaper for a company this large. HDHC plans cover very little. Following HR layoffs, HSA deductions from payroll do not show up with any consistency.

Hi! Thanks for your review. It is true that is it a great place to work for those that enjoy travelling from place to place. I am sorry you felt that the management didn’t meet your expectations and you felt taken advantage from. I will make sure top management gets your advice. I wish you all the best in your next career.

Pros

The training was excellent they flew a group of us to Ohio for a week for training. Also I met a couple lifelong friends while working for the company mostly we talk about how much we hate sgs.

Cons

I first had an issue when I went a whole month without a paycheck because HR said I never submitted my direct deposit and then sent my physical checks to the wrong address. My manager was terrible, older and did not know how to properly go over percentages and stats. I tried explaining to my manager for months that my productivity rating was low because of the work computer. I was told no I was wrong until I was written up for it so I did some research and figured out that my inspections were getting hung up in the system, had my manager remove them and I had one of the highest percentages on he team still got wrote up. Management decided to do a surprise visit on me which isn’t a problem except that tried to when I was in my area that has no cell service so when he got there he wasn’t able to get ahold of me. No big deal most people would walk into the dealership and ask for me, not him he waited in his car for 4 hours until I left the dealer and got service and saw I missed his calls, I was also written up for this because they said I purposely turned my cell phone off which I didn’t. Lastly toward the end of my career there we were really slow in my territory so they asked me to go to buffalo and Rhode Island for a few weeks I said yea no problem and went. After I got back it was time for me to take my vacation during my vacation I called my manager to ask if I could take an additional day off because I was told we were so slow and wouldn’t be getting my full 40 hours of work I was told no we are now very busy in my area I said great no problem. I get to work on Monday and got laid off by 3 o’clock. This was in August and I’m still waiting on my last check from them. This company needs to do better. I consistently drove 200 miles per DAY and got all of my inspections done in under 40 hours a week and kept getting told that I need to do better because the computer said I should have done it 5 minutes quicker. ... If you give me more work I’ll do it. MICRO MANAGEMENT. Be aware that you could be laid off in a moments notice! My friend in California was hired for full time but had to leave the company because we was only getting about 20 hours a week. and 13 cents for mileage reimbursement is a joke. Do not work here!
