Pros

The IT department used to be a fun place to work before the CTO arrived (who has since left in 2017). SLAC itself felt like a much more connected place when I first started there over 10 years ago. - Good benefits, good pay

Cons

- CIO (left in 2017, I believe) tore the guts out of the IT organization. Laid off over half of the department in the name of "efficiency". A pathetic person with an extremely brittle ego, putting his favorites in top positions (without going through due diligence, like an official hiring process), who ran the department through systemic fear and intimidation. - Management didn't seem to care - they found this moron screwing up left right and center, and still didn't fire him - He also kept some of the most inept people I have ever worked with around him, while letting other, awesome workers go - great management! - I had one good manager in over 10 years of service there, and they let him go summarily, along with another middle-manager at his level, only to merge several groups with our's under no management (effectively) for over a year, and then hired someone who was *completely* under-qualified to take over the position as manager. Why? Because he was a Yes man to JW, the CIO. Awesome! - More politics and management-through-fear than I've seen in my entire 20+ year career - As it is an organization funded by the DOE, and run by STanford University, you get hit with pay-freezes and "bad" constraints from both ends whenever there are budget squeezes and such. Can go on for years, limiting pay increases. As for bonuses......mwuah ha ha ha! Look elsewhere.
