Pros

Historically, Safeway has had a stable environment in which one can work for a long time in the private label group as a brand manager (unlike in a CPG firm where you either are promoted or worked out over time). It also is an environment in which you can see a lot, as there is not the same scrutiny from many layers of management as at a CPG firm. Also, while Safeway is conservative, you can be sure it is not going to do anything unsavory. That I did appreciate.

Cons

It is a pretty conservative environment and not the most exciting. Many people in the grocery industry stay in it for their entire careers, so the setting is not always that dynamic or forward thinking. Note that at the time of this writing Safeway has been slated to be acquired by the same company that owns Albertsons. This will be finalized at the beginning of the year 1/1/15. Time will tell if this is good or bad, but in the short run it is probably not good, as much will be in a state of chaos.

low pay, corporate atmosphere, schedule shifts around from week to week with no fixed days, manager inefficiency, very little opportunity to move up unless you want to spend the rest of your life there

Pros

Great people to work with

Cons

I have worked here for almost seven years and have noticed that managers here don't even have high school diplomas, but they are trained to act like they own the entire corporation, and act like robots, and they have no common sense. Employees are responsible for running two to three departments at a time and are forced to work under extreme stress; there is hardly anything on the shelves, and departments are kept dirty because management is forced to cut hours, and few are scheduled to work. Constant complains from customer, but management don't care. The only times things are perfect when the corporate calls and want a visit, then employees are borrowed from close by stores and every department is turned into as if the stored just opened. Only ten hours of break is given between shifts, hours can very from 16-40. It has fake union, whit $150 check, they take $56, and after taxes your are left with hardly $100 per week.
