Pros

Good hours, easy work, and ok pay for the time.

Cons

With the union dues factored in, you would be paid less than minimum wage, and there were relatively large amounts of drama/rumors considering it was a grocery store.

Pros

Easy to get into, they will be willing to give anyone a shot, even if they have criminal history, or if they worked for Safeway but quit in the past.

Cons

They do not resect worker's schedule and are constantly hiring new people, only to cut hours of existing people, some of whom have worked here for years. They say it's the computer system but when it comes down to it, regardless of who's "fault" it is, they are scheduling workers when they are unavailable, and even if you talk to them (management), usually nothing changes. Sometimes you'll get your needed schedule for a couple weeks but then suddenly, seemingly just because it can, the system completely scrambles the schedules, and screws multiple people over. When I was explaining my availability to someone from management and I told them I couldn't get into work at certain times of the day, they said, "do you just not want to come in those times? Because you can't just 'not want to come in' ". Like, what? Even if that were the case, yes I can, because I gave my availability when I started working here, and that is when I'm able to get to work by, period. Things that you would figure you would have a say over, you usually don't. I've had some coworkers who were scheduled when they needed to drop off kids. I've seen other coworkers, who are high schoolers being scheduled on school days, and up until late in the evening. You always hear ads in Safeway about how they are hiring: it's because people quit so often, be it having their schedule ignored, being flat out disrespected, or the stress. A saying goes among coworkers, that the only time Safeway will fire someone, is if they steal, or if they chase a thief out. There are no paid vacations and they specifically keep everyone except management below 40 hours so that we can't have proper insurance and other benefits one usually associates with being employed. Multiple people, myself included, have had their paychecks not come. I've talked to management who has supposedly talked to HR but it's been months at this point. Because of the lack of coordination and consistency of the higher-ups, it's a very stressful job, even though by the title you would figure it would be simple. Everyday, every manager, will have completely different expectations of you and there are some managers that are notorious for mistreating both employees and customers (I have talked to a couple coworkers who have cried over it). The fact is, there's a lot of problems at Safeway. It's a big place, so that's understandable, but what's not okay is how management, HR, and corporate refuse to listen to both customers and employees to fix issues that are repeatedly brought to their attention. Working here feels, and in actuality has been unsustainable. I am in debt to my landlord now, because Safeway would not resolve scheduling and HR issues and give me enough hours to make rent. It seemingly doesn't matter how many times you try to sit down and talk to someone, nothing changes.
