Pros

every department is a skeleton crew and no one has full-time hours. they don't want to pay for benefits so you're sub a 40/hr employee

Cons

DO NOT work for produce if you respect yourself and your boundaries. it sounded like an easy enough job but it's actually a nightmare. they lied about where to put me before my training and they don't even follow their own procedures. what's the point of training me and making me waste my time learning something that will never be applied to the job? they stretch you thin, having only 2 or 3 people to work the entire department. they stick you in a 30 degree freezer chopping wet fruit on small table, standing on a wet, slippery floor for 8 hours straight. they tell you not to twist your back or reach down to grab anything but that's bull. my back was twisted the entire time and you're supposed to go dunking for 20lb+ watermelons in freezing water. the freezer fans blast you overhead the entire time too. i felt like i was going to pass away and the tips of my fingers started blistering through my gloves. you're forced to wear this dress code that does not keep you warm whatsoever. in the training videos they don't tell you that this is your fate. they say that you'll be preparing cut fruit for 'usually no more than 30 minutes at a time' because of the temperature. there's even a section on how to deal with the supposedly BRIEF moment that you'll be in there. then they throw you in there for 8 hours like it's acceptable and normal for humans. the people i worked with wouldn't even speak to me. i kept asking valid questions like package weights, how to cut the fruit, where to store it, etc. they just stared at me like i was speaking a different language, acting angry that i was even in there. my first 5 minutes of the job consisted of me catching my manager and one of my coworkers trash talking others in the department before i even knew their names. great first impression! it wasn't long until i was berated and chewed out by this same trash talking person as before, who didn't even know my name yet. they legitimately tried to fight me before my first hour on the job and tried to assume that i was too dense to understand a basic training video while talking down to me like a child. after dealing with their nonsense, the person stops what they're doing, stomps out of the room to trash talk me to the manager that they were gossiping with before. it was so childish and weird. i felt like i was being hazed. hazed over FRUIT, for freaks sake. you can imagine the treatment i received for the rest of the day based on their behavior. no one told me my break schedule or my lunch. the two people i was working with would disappear without a word. it was like they wanted me out from the start. at the end of my shift, i nearly went to the emergency room because i couldn't get my body temperature back to normal. i was shivering and throwing up for hours, battling the worst headache of my life. i didn't even stock the shelves with produce before i left. that part is apparently gatekept by one insanely rude guy who screams at coworkers for rotating a lemon the incorrect way. no one wants to work with him. shocking. there's a reason why this department has a massive turnover rate. the people are horrific. avoid at all costs if you value yourself.

Pros

Semi flexible scheduling, Weekly pay, good health insurance and benefits package, good honest job

Cons

This company is very good at promising promotion to make you work harder for a position they never intend on giving you in the first place. The turn over rate is so high, that you basically have to start over with a new manager a couple times a year and as a result expectations are often unclear or a double standard. It is not uncommon to get contradicting instructions from 2 different managers. The company tries to cut labor costs and cut corners so that you end up doing 40 hours of work in 28 hours of pay. They do not care if they are overworking you, if you get injured as a result, it’s your problem. They don’t care about the employee just the company’s bottom line. The union won’t do anything for you pretty much with any issue you bring to the table. Their ordering system is set up to send you a crap ton of backstock but they absolutely will not give you the time to work it so it ends up piling up in the back room, no matter how good you are with managing inventory.

Pros

1. A 5% discount on non-safeway brands, and a 10% on safeway brand items! what a steal 2. If you love working hard with little to no appreciation then youll like it here 3. You're part of a family... a family where the boss might not know you're name for the first 2 years working there 4. Love constantly hearing about hot, new drama? Welcome aboard 5. Literally nothing

Cons

1. Questionable company... they're not a big fan of following labor laws or union rules 2. Don't say labor laws or union, they'll treat you differently... (ironic, because it goes against the first con) 3. Raises? Ha! Only if you've been with the company for so long, doing more work than you agreed to do or even get paid to do, and after you've been laughed at in the face a few times. Raises might not be a common occurrence, but asking for them is... especially by longtime employees.
