Pros

Good pay and reasonable benefits

Cons

Horrible expectations (quotas), not enough help and a threatening (caustic) environment coming from the corporate and district offices

Pros

Co-workers become almost family, fairly simple/easy work just physically demamding, job security.

Cons

No help -one person job. The "threes a crowd guarantee" is an extremely foolish and dim witted promise, due to the fact that zero extra hours were given to any Safeway location and zero overtime is ever allowed. This forces mainly dairy during the day and frozen at night to "back-up check" for quite a significant part of their shift (30min. to 1 hr. +) Remember Diary and Frozen are the only single person positions in the store and they are, 90% of the time, the ONLY "backup" checkers? The fact that the top level of the company ensured this to customers and told the store managers to "figure it out" without any more hours also solidifies the fact that they're greedy and idiotic beyond repair. The dairy/frozen managers are expected to face, date-check, order, manage incoming firms, change end bases each week, breakdown loads containing every other departments load (no help from them), organize freezer, do BRI's, Inventory, and back up check at 32 hrs/week? It's ludicrous. The Safeway motto should be "Do a ton more, faster -with a lot less"

Pros

If you are young it is a good foot in the door job. It was for me. Union benifits were nice. Most of my co workers were helpful and nice. I learned a lot and helped me come out of my shy shell a bit.

Cons

Management will end up screwing you over big time. Didn't matter if i worked there 2 and a half years and being called one of the best courtesy clerks. I was working a ton of 8 hour shifts in a row for over a week. Money was nice but it got soooo overwelming after a while. And i was called up to the office and explained its been overwelming and my anxeity was getting bad. So they asked if i wanted a shorter week next week so i agreed. But after that week they gave me a 4 hour week a 8 hr week and then took me off the schedule entirely for one week. Union helped and they gave me my hours back for a short time and agreed to give me 20 hrs min. That never happend. There was favoritism going on, new employees getting more hours then people who clearly have more seniority. It took a toll on me mentally with hour cuts and rent i needed to pay on top of personal issues i was at a very low point. The safeway i worked at was in the middle of a redneck gettoy neighborhood so we had a ton of people doing drugs, steeling, and rude customers.
