Pros

15% employee discount and they have pretty good sales sometimes.

Cons

So many procedures and not as focused on customer service as they should be....at 7.50 an hour.

Pros

Very friendly employees, Safeway wants to have excellent customer service so the employees are typically great people. Easy to start friendly conversation with employees and managers. Great place to get a lot of customer service skills. Easy to open up to talk to people.

Cons

You have to spend several years to start making a decent salary. You'll get trained to work in other departments but won't actually get a promotion. So you may start as a Courtesy Clerk, get trained for checking, but because you never got promoted, you won't accumulate raises. You'll end up feeling like you're working really hard for something, but its false hope. Must be dedicated to moving into management to make it worth staying for several years.

Pros

Easy to get hired on. Fair amount of advancement opportunities. Work with quality people. Union benefits.

Cons

Safeway actively seeks the termination of old contract (well paid) employees at the corporate level. Offers less pay (minimum wage) to new employees than Wal-Mart. Unrealistically high service standards. Forces employees to work drastically varying hours (often with only 8 hours between shifts). Offers only 20 hours per week on average, yet expects to be your first priority. Company profits increase while employee wages, benefits, and morale decrease. Salary employees are expected to work abnormally high hours (often 6+ days per week).
