In this economy a job is a job

Pros

Weekly paychecks. Lots of really nice people at store level.

Cons

Corporate mentality which translates to: there are 20 people out there waiting to take your job. Lots of lip service about 'the heart of Safeway' but very little action. Part time never turns into full time. Health insurance expensive and not very good coverage on prescriptions. Have to use Safeway pharmacies.

Pros

- People - Free company gym - 10% off private label products (should make this off all products like Target) - Cafeteria - Challenging work - Good learning experience - Many diversity employee resource groups - Support many good causes in community - Nice stores - In house nurse and clinic - Is trying to be less conservative/old school/traditional by removing cubicle walls and having more open space in some areas of the organization - Typical vacation/sick hours offered - Many career growth opportunities for entry level positions - Overall diverse workplace - Invested in technology - Just 4 U program - Focus on quality products

Cons

- Still very formal and conservative retail culture (even the dress code) - Top down management style (Courage is one of the competencies that is encouraged in the individual development program book. However, it is known to backfire in reality) - Many red tapes and approval needed to get things done - Many meetings, process, procedures and reports that can be streamlined and consolidated to save company's resources and employees' time - Reactive environment rather than proactive/creative - Silo driven (getting a little better than before) - Uneven workload and salary (some functions/departments in the companies seem to have much shorter days than others) - Many unhappy and burned out employees - Starting to lose hardworking, core and experienced employees - Many newly promoted managers lack experience but the company doesn't seem to have a choice because slowly the experienced ones find better jobs externally - Benefits is getting worse each year for the last few years (you and/or your family will have to pay more for medical vs before) - Pension was decreased to half what it used to be a few years back - No 401K matching - Very political (yes I know big companies are like that but this one is exceptional)
