Pros

Some flexibility in schedule, along with benefits and wages that the senior employees receive.

Cons

Corporate is out of touch with the day to day workings of a grocery store. Most, if not all the talent has left this company when this company became centralized. An example, try explaining the money used to implement the 5 S program? Did that help sales and profit? NO! We are not a Toyota manufacturing plant and such programs don't work. Understand that the typical grocery store is dynamic and in a constant state of change. No two days are exactly the same. If Safeway really wants to be a better than the competition, listen to the store employees and not someone in the corporate world. We see the real business every day and can pretty much tell when one of the new gimmicks is a waste of time and money. Sell groceries and don't make it complicated.

Pros

Overall, the people here are nice and helpful. The business seems to be stable, even in the economic downturn. The location is great and the gym and cafeteria are very nice amenities.

Cons

Working here I feel like I've gone back in time 20 years because the systems are antiquated, "face-time" and politics are the only ways to get ahead, and pro-employee benefits like telecommuting and a relaxed dress-code are frowned upon. In addition, the CEO along with Sr. management rule with an "I know what's best for you", command and control approach. Fresh ideas from outsiders are often stifled by a stale, unwavering bureaucracy of senior leaders. Wages are not competitive and meaningful recognition is few and far between, unless you happen to be one of the chosen few. Lastly, I am shocked by the overwhelming amount of poor leaders (i.e. micro-managing, condescending, bullying, self-serving) in this organization. It's clear that recognizing, developing and empowering people is not the focus here!

Pros

The job is very simple and easy. Not physically demanding at all. Easy to request days off. Medical benefits are good. 10% off safeway brand products.

Cons

Mgmt treats you like you're incompetent because you're just a lowly cashier. The pay scale is terriable. Takes FOREVER to reach the top. Work schedual varies each week. You never know how many hours you're going to get. Have to be patient when dealing with some of the dumbest people you'll ever meet in your life. The union dues! It makes it show your earning less than minimum wage in the beginning.
