Pros

There aren't many good reasons now to work for safeway other than they are always looking for help in the bakery dept so getting hired is pretty easy

Cons

not enough hours scheduled to get all the work done. the dept is always short handed so the manager is not able to help the bakers when they are scheduled to. the pay is not competitive especially since new hires have a new union contract. union dues higher than the benefits they offer.

Pros

Health care after one year, minimum hours required for coverage are guaranteed by union. Lots of locations if one needs to re-locate, transferring is usually not a problem. Slow and steady wage increases over time.

Cons

Wage increases are based on hours worked, NOT performance, so one gets paid the same as someone who doesn't work as hard. Increases are also very slow in the early going; 4 - 10 cent raises, then 4 - 20 cent raises, then 35 cent raises, then eventually 50 cent raises, etc... Most people starting at minimum wage trying to work up get discouraged long before the larger pay increases kick in. Department heads don't have the authority to raise their best employees' salaries up faster based on performance. They can only give more hours to some employees, allowing them to get raises more quickly based on the "hours worked" system.

Pros

Hours, basic benefits, friendly coworkers, Union(Only for permanent job), meeting new customers, and sometimes free food.

Cons

There is no appreciation. At the Seafood department, I did things I did not have to do whenever there was no one present. I lost my patience with this job after they kept changing my schedule at the last minute, never having a set schedule, and they would only get onto me whenever I was doing something wrong. I was at the Seafood department trying to help the manager and they were basically letting their anger out on me from another employees faults. I left after that incident because I don't deserve to be mistreated. The raises are not even worth it either. The management expects you to be like a robot. If you're being treated like a robot, find another job. The management offered me to come back but I happily declined. I also got offered to be assistant seafood manager but declined that to.
