Pros
1) Great benefits. I know this is obvious to many, but it's worth mentioning that when you only pay $55 per paycheck for good low-deductible coverage for your whole family (!), it's effectively the same as making many thousands of dollars more. And everyone gets this care. It's great. HR is pretty proactive and helpful. 2) Work culture really reinforces that we do meaningful work at SAGE: I think we do feel that we're supporting research and education well and that we're good partners to science, academia, libraries, educators, etc. 3) Relative to your specific job (i.e. at SAGE vs. at other companies) you will enjoy a lot of autonomy. The culture broadly respects the expertise that each department cultivates. 4) Grounded and supportive managers who are less of a demand on you than a resource you can trust for help.
Cons
1) In any department there is a lot of variation day to day; few jobs at SAGE are rigidly defined and your projects will vary depending on what we're publishing and our priorities. This can mean that the workload is sometimes very heavy. (Occasionally, it can also be light.) 2) I worry that some of the pros may be specific to my area (Editorial/Publishing, which is in some ways the core of the business). I try to engage often with other departments but it's hard to say if they always feel like their job is as healthy. 3) My personal goals for my own job description are always kind of tantalizingly out of reach. Which hurts because my bonus pay is tied directly to them.
