Wonderful company, terrible leadership

Pros

Indecisive decision-making and poor communication at the top leads to a lack of clarity around company priorities and siloed departments. People feel burnt out and underappreciated. The level of excellence on stage is not seen in the administration.

Cons

Being part of a company that creates beautiful art at a world-class level, and working with extremely talented craftspeople, musicians, and artisans.

Pros

Great music, co-workers and exciting stage to be on and around. Pay is only great if you are a union member but the administration subsidizes those benefits on the back of the very poorly paid staffers.

Cons

As a result of the low pay for staffers (i.e. music, admin, stage management and assistants to designers) the turnover is quite high. Like all bay area non-profits, they are facing a huge "talent bleed." The high cost of living simply cannot keep the highly skilled people here at those low wages. Also, too much decision-making by committee which rarely results in a great outcome and ends up wasting a lot of time and money.

Pros

Amazing music, artist and stage experience. Great people. The energy and hum of the opera house during the season is intoxicating and exhilarating at the same time.

Cons

- There is no solid direction from management/board at the company - There is no rhyme or reason as to how they pay nor promote people in the company- out of touch with the standards of this area regarding pay and advancement - Work your butt off for no pay, no advancement, no appreciation, no incentives and no acknowledgement of performance. - No training - sink or swim
