Pros

Great people. Excellent engineering programs. Salaries comparable to private industry, with the added bonus of job security. Excellent extended education program.

Cons

Too many rigid rules, and management obsessed with school ranking and GPA. Lack of clear career development paths, akin to swimming laps in a pool of caramel.

Pros

Sense of contribution to national security. Knowing you are working in a national laboratory environment that the nation turns to for solving complex and critical problems.

Cons

Management promotes people with degrees only from top institutions. You have to come from one of those institutions in order to get paid enough to be able to get promoted. Very political and rule-driven, except when they want to make an exception to the rule.
