Begrudgingly get out of bed in the morning for another day at this company.....

Pros

Great people to work with (for the most part). New Group CEO who doesn't come from South Africa. Some leadership team members are a pleasure to work with. Good 401k plan. Location in South Portland or Boston is good for non-mill people.

Cons

Lead team disjointed. Manufacturing focused, and 1950's management style. Systems are antiquated and data mining tools haphazardly rolled out by IT folks, not business users. CYA mentality and lack of true leadership at the CEO level (in North America). Bonus plan attractive, but rarely does it pay out. Stock options are a joke and aren't worth the price of the paper they are printed on. PMP process (performance management) collaborative in some functions, but in others you had better make sure that you don't have any "old tapes" or your career is ruined. Favoritism abounds, especially if you go snowmobiling with the CEO or drive a pick-up truck. Stress levels always elevated. No room for growth given the tenure of "paper" people.

Pros

Some of the co-workers share knowledge and support each other. Mill people are very supportive and share information.

Cons

The good ole boy network starts with some of the managers. One manager has set up employee's to fail. If you excel or try to move up, you are made to look bad. Bonuses are given out to favorite employees, not tied to performance. The yearly PMP's are a joke. The manager determines the grade. I was once told outstanding grades are only given to the manager and regardless of how well I excel, I would never qualify for outstanding marks. There is prejudice and discrimination toward minorities in Sappi North America, look at the company mix of employee's to confirm my belief.

Pros

Great coworkers, hard working and care about the future of the company. Good benefits, above average pay for the area.

Cons

Leadership seemed to be disconnected from the rest of the company. In a shrinking industry doing more with less was a way of life. Advancement opportunities are limited if you are not one of the selected few.
