Pros

Schneider provides a fantastic support system for their drivers. Their terminals, called Operating Centers, provide showers, laundry, food, entertainment, weight rooms, company stores, repair facilities, company cars as loaners, and even physical therapists in a few. They also have a pretty good benefits package, and they do a fair job of getting a driver home in a timely manner.

Cons

Due to the sheer number of employees working at Schneider, and probably the high industry-wide turnover rate, drivers are made to feel like they are a commodity by management and dispatch, easily replaceable. We are, but they don't have to treat us that way. For example, out of a class of 30, only two of us lasted longer than a year.

Pros

For the most part, the people at Schneider are decent. I had a great dispatcher, and the opportunity to drive under a dedicated account with no prior experience in the industry.

Cons

My trainer was terrible. He slept when I was driving and avoided backing like the plague. Thankfully, I was only OTR with him for 5 days. The pay is terrible, even for a rookie. Last but definitely not least, the equipment is atrocious! Almost every tire on the truck needed to be replaced before it was issued to me. It was filthy inside & out. When I went in for preventative maintenance, I was in Atlanta for 3 days because there were so many mechanical issues with the truck. I did get breakdown pay, which is better than nothing but still; 3 days is a long time to sit when you're supposed to be driving and making money. I would say that 90% of the trailers have tires that need to be replaced. Many of them are missing mud flaps, the tandems are next to impossible to slide sometimes (WD-40 will be your best friend). In the event of an emergency breakdown, be prepared to wait at least 3-7 hours before help arrives. The emergency maintenance department has no sense of urgency, and don't seem to be concerned about the driver nor the customer; I've missed delivery windows due to the faulty equipment.

Pros

You go home every night. That's it.

Cons

The hours are long and they pay is insulting. I work in San Bernardino, CA and we're paid $10.50 an hour plus load pay and miles. Management wants the drivers to work a minimum of 10 hours a day even when freight is slow. They've crafted a method of dispatching to ensure that they get 10 hours of work out of you. Load pay ranges anywhere from $20.50-$30.50 based on how long you've been there. They also have a performance system in play that adds up to $6 in addition to your load pay if you can manage to hit a targeted number combined of several categories such as your, (days work, MPG, over speed, and preventable accidents). The mileage pays $0.10 a mile so racking up on miles is a no go here, which sucks because we frequent San Diego. The office personnel doesn't care about any of your grievances, they'll tell you anything to get you out of their face. The office personnel dislikes the fact that you make more money than they do and their not afraid to let you know either. The dispatchers dish out loads at random so don't be surprised if they want you to go from Moreno Valley, CA all the way to Compton, CA (about 80 miles) to pick up a load. This place sucks.
