Chaos At Its Best

Pros

The pros are I had a great boss who really cared about work/life balance, cared about his independent retail customers and would go the extra mile. The company had pretty good benefits (medical, vision dental, 401k) and some nice perks to go along with it.

Cons

Company was always in a state of management flux. You never knew from one day to the next who was getting canned. Work/life balance for field people was very tough. Territories got bigger and bigger due to cut backs. The independent business owners who made Scotts-Miracle Gro the name it is today were being forgotten.

Pros

Pay and benefits are competitive. If you can relocate, there are many opportunities for growth, training and promotion. The company offers tuition assistance if you want to work towards a degree and a good match on its 401k plan.

Cons

Long hours, stressful environment; there's a surprise rash of layoffs every few years. HR administers annual associate engagement surveys that don't yield change; feels like leadership pretends to care.

Thank you for your feedback, Jim Collins model of Level 5 leadership - The Triumph of Humility and Fierce resolve - July 2005 Harvard Business Review, is a valid point. All companies would like to have level 5 leaders and I believe all leaders would like to see themselves that way. The reality of Collins article is that only 11 of 1,495 Fortune 500 companies that Collins researched had Level 5 leaders. It is a rare skill set that every leader should aspire to.
