Pros

The work is very fun, and it's a great experience whether you're looking to go to medical school or even just to understand the healthcare industry better. Some providers are more demanding than others - I had one physician who allowed for a lot of down time in the office once the last patient's note was finished and she was still reviewing for the next patient, others where they had short appointments and I was responsible for many more areas of the chart than just the note.

Cons

The pay is barely above minimum wage and I have a suspicion that they "gerrymander" the hours to avoid giving people benefits. My position was supposed to be full-time, but I averaged about 27 hours a week despite requesting cross-training in multiple departments to cover time my primary physicians were unavailable.

Pros

Great learning experience if you are looking to go to med/pa school.

Cons

If you have a bad head scribe or a head scribe who favors certain employees, you can end up with really inconsistent or crappy hours.
