Cons

low pay, no benefits, not PTO, no sick pay, having to find someone to cover you when you are sick.

Pros

Great doctors! You can learn a lot. Huge time commitment.

Cons

They're just using people who want to go to medical school. Chump pay and you get worked like a dog. Everyone quits after about a year. Pretty typical. Just get your experience and get out. You get paid more to be a cashier at grocery stores like come on. If you need to pay bills- this is not the job. If you want clinical hours for that medical school application then you have no choice. It's a tough world.

Pros

-Looks great on med school apps, get to become close to Drs who can write great recommendations! -invaluable experience, gives you the chance to see what field of medicine could really work for you! -Chances to move up in the company. Although most scribes just scribe during college and stop once they apply to med school, I know a few that have gone on to management positions, chief scribes or junior leaders. -Fairly flexible scheduling -Paid vacation starting soon!

Cons

-The pay isn't great, I was previously working in service/hospitality and making nearly double the starting pay. They can pay scribes so little because premed students need the experience for their apps and it's nice to get paid something as opposed to nothing. I took the pay cut for my applications. Scribes who are hired directly through the hospital make double off the bat. ScribeAmerica gives you the chance, gives you an in, and you get paid as opposed to only volunteer work -Long shifts that don't let you get a full 40 hours a week, don't work well with a full time class schedule. It makes sense with how hospitals worth though. -Long commitment, most people are able to transfer if need be, but scribes are mostly college students, who transfer schools or go home for the summer etc. If a scribe can't transfer yet can't stay, they can't go on to another scribe job, and you might not be able to use the experience on applications at all. Overall they are a business, here to make money. They connect experience hungry students with hospitals that greatly need the help. High turnover because of the nature of the job and student employees.
