You'll learn a lot, but it's not for everyone

After working in an ED for a year, I have learned so much medical knowledge and feel confident that medicine is the field for me. Your job involves guessing what the physicians are thinking and then checking with them to make sure you got it right, so you couldn't ask for a better opportunity, let alone one that you get paid for.

Cons

Although you are getting paid, it really isn't enough considering the amount of stress, knowledge, and work required to do this job. The learning curve with this job is so steep that for the first few weeks you will be extremely stressed out and anxious all the time. Even after you start to feel competent doing this job, you always feel inadequate because you're trying to guess the thought process of someone who has decades of accumulated medical knowledge and experience. The hours can be really rough, especially if you have other commitments, and on top of that shifts can be extremely stressful depending on the patient load and doctor you are working with. You can't really build relationships with your co-workers because you see them so infrequently. Despite all this, I still love this job and I learn something new almost every shift. If you are on the fence about whether medical school is for you, this is a good job to explore your options. However, it is not for everyone and I fully recognize that.

you will definitely learn a great amount of medical terminology

Cons

extremely poor management, little to no guidance if you are not familiar with medical terms as of yet, low staff so hours are long with little pay, toxic work environment, you wouldn't get feedback from management you will just get written up if anything goes wrong and face consequences later

The best job currently available for any students interested in the field of health care. You work side by side with great physicians to help increase their work flow and improve patient satisfication.

Cons

Some experiences in the emergency room may be difficult for some to handle. Not always a designated time for lunch breaks
