Pros

Good starting pay. Friendly people.

Cons

The extent to which Securian mimics Dilbert cartoons is uncanny. Most people either quit after 1 or 2 years, or stay at the organization until they retire. Things move slowly, and new ideas don't come by all that often. People advance from sheer time spent at the company - it's not a meritocracy.

Pros

Extensive training, volunteer opportunities, all-company events, decent pay, comfortable working environment, longevity (low turn-over rates).

Cons

Hiring from within makes it difficult to get in to begin with. There seems to be some hostility from within, especially those who have been there for a long time without being promoted. Because people are working in the same positions for many years, the environment becomes difficult to maintain ambiguity. Be prepared to work a lot of over time.

Pros

It was mostly stable. (Although pensions have been slashed for existing retirees and current workers). The hours were ok as long as you did not have to support something at night.

Cons

The company is slow to react to changing technologies. Many mainframe applications have not yet been converted over even though they have been talking about it in committee for decades. The company uses economic "situations" as an excuse for keeping pay lower and slashing benefits. This happened when I was there. They had their most profitable year ever, and they doubled our health insurance costs and said they could not give raises due to market conditions.
