Pros

I have worked for Sempra Energy for approximately one year after working for a major law firm for 25 years. SE is one of 2 Fortune 500 companies headquartered in San Diego. SE has built a brand new LEED certified building in the East Village area of downtown SD. The building is clean, desks are ergonomically sound and can be raised, includes a gym and workout classes, and an onsite cafeteria. I park two blocks away, offsite, in a large parking structure with a lot of space. Parking is paid for in full by the company. SE has an excellent benefits package, competitive salaries, and supports a diverse workforce. One of the biggest draws for me was the opportunity for career growth and development at SE. Employees are encouraged to move into different positions and to gain expertise throughout the company and its utilities. (I was stuck in the same position at a law firm.) SE cares for its employees and encourages giving programs, wellness programs and community involvement.

Cons

None at this time, just before my one year anniversary.

Pros

Some of the best benefits I've seen or heard in my tenure. While salary may be on lower end of the average range, it is easily made up for with a great pension, high 401k match, annual bonus, etc. Sempra provides great stability during times of economic turmoil. There are so many opportunities within the organization to feel like you are making a societal change (green energy development, smart cars, electricity rates, providing natural gas to developing countries, etc). All organizations have their flaws, but overall, Sempra is an amazing place to work.

Cons

Have to be patient to move up the ladder. Most people start their careers at Sempra and stay forever (a tribute to to how great of a place to work it is) so you have to wait your turn. Can be political environment but so is every large energy/utility company. Depending on the department, long hours could be in store but it is cyclical and there are always opportunities to move around.
