Not sure what they are doing

Pros

People, Atmosphere, encouragement, culture, benefits, competitive pay

Cons

Changes directions too fast and sales team takes the hit because of how hard it is to adjust. Changes that happen without notice. Never know how we are getting paid. Seems to weed out tenured reps and bring lower paid reps in scares you out of wanting to move up and excel in the company.

Toxic environment

Pros

WFH, nice salary if you hit target

Cons

Where to start? Working in sales at Semrush has led me to burnout. Targets depend entirely on your book of business; some people get lucky with books of business where clients buy on their own accord, others don’t. If you fall within the second category, you are doomed. Clients rarely reply to outreach (they don’t see the value of having an account executive), they ask you to make calls and then don’t give you numbers to call (apart from customer service numbers, or numbers of people who have already left the company) If you manage to get a client on a zoom call, you will have to be really aggressive to sell because clients usually buy at their own time. If you don’t have clients buying on their own, and people don’t reply to your outreach, you won’t hit target and will be put on PIP and fired. In the meantime, you see the top performed being praised when all they close is inbound or even self serve deals. Managers are usually useless, only give you tips about negotiation but their product and industry knowledge is limited. You get paid peanuts on new business and it’s not even part of the target, which encourages you to neglect those clients and creates a bad buying experience. Yet, the VPs and the managers think it’s actually down to how much input metrics and sales best practices you have, if you reach/don’t reach target. It’s a poisonous environment where most people are exhausted/burnt out but are afraid to say it out loud. The company’s not performing so well either so don’t join, do yourself a favour - you’ll thank me.

Dear Colleague, Thank you for your feedback. The Sales team is currently the fastest-growing department at Semrush and receives plenty of opportunities for research, development, and experiments. It's a highly dynamic and competitive field where the expectations are also high. Understandably, it may not be suitable or comfortable for everyone, but we are committed to creating a healthy environment for our people. We are sorry to hear that it didn’t work out for you. But please remember that all our managers and HRs are always open to conversations and feedback. If we can assist you further—let us know. Yours, Semrush Team

Pros

Hybrid work from home model for most, free snacks and lunches in office, fun environment at times, ping pong tables and more, diverse

Cons

This company has gone severely downhill in the past 6 months or so. I’m worried about its future honestly. First off, they require you to make sales plans for your top customers. Not a bad thing but it’s nothing more than a scavenger hunt through Salesforce and input into a Google Sheet. You don’t update the high power CRM, as you are supposed to update the Sheet that is on a shared drive. Tedious and greatly ineffective. You are paid based off your book of business whether you sell them anything or not. If you have a good book buying on their own, you will make some money. If you are reliant on selling through Zoom meetings, you must be aggressive or else you will fall short of targets. Most will upgrade on their own through the web so thankfully it counts towards your target. The sales cycles can take time so your meetings need to set up future business. If they aren’t buying on their own you won’t have a cushion and hitting target to make money will be difficult. They recently raised their prices on their oldest clients, assuring us we would be paid on the increase. Halfway through the month they took it out of commissions, dropping many people in commissions tiers paying them less. Since the stock isn’t doing well, it’s a great way to free up cash and lower expenses, make things not commissionable randomly. New customers are paid out so little they are often not given the attention needed because, while a new customer is great, they pay out significantly less that it isn’t worth the time. They raise sales goals after a month starts as well. Managers are often worthless unless you are an ambassador for them, then you will always have a job. If not, be prepared for some favoritism and unfair practices. Change happens and it’s an understatement. Many times something will change and people will be reluctant to change knowing it will be forgotten or not focused on the following week. When asked about negative reviews, the CEO said “everyone in the industry has these. They are from people that are unhappy. Happy people don’t leave reviews”, yet a year ago they are many glowing reviews. The sales side is extremely shady in their practices, coincidentally with falling stock prices. I bet the next earnings report will show record cost savings and increased paying customers on the backs of not paying their employees correctly.

Dear Colleague, You're absolutely right–these days, we receive a lot of negative reviews. This is understandable and is closely related to the numerous changes within the Sales team and the introduction of some new processes. However, it's important to note that constant change is a core aspect of our culture and a key value of our company. We openly discuss all the changes with all employees, but we also recognize that it may not suit everyone. In terms of plans and KPIs, we ensure clear and timely communication and provide all metric updates quarterly. With that being said, we appreciate your feedback and advice for the leadership. We understand the importance of providing opportunities for our employees to be heard, and please believe us—we are listening. Yours, Semrush Team
