Pros

The people are amazing, the perks are great but the energy around the work itself is the most exciting part. People are inspired to do their life's work here.

Cons

No place is perfect. The amazing work atmosphere and stellar perks have lead to a bit of an entitlement problem amongst a small population of employees.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post a comment. It is wonderful that you have seen that Shopify employees are ‘inspired to do their life’s work here’; this observation really reinforces our hiring goal to always place the best people in the right roles at the right time. One of those things Shopify looks for when hiring is passion. If a candidate is passionate about what they do, and they are able to bring that passion and their ‘life’s work’ to Shopify, then everyone wins - both Shopify and the individual! As for that minority who you see have developed an attitude of entitlement; let’s just hope they find their passion again rather than letting themselves be distracted by the perks, ‘cause in the long run the perks aren't what's really important.

Guru position

Pros

* Open minded folks. If you have a good team or team leader you can always talk to them for support. Not all team leads are good though. * Employee feedback is taken seriously when it’s about the workflow.

Cons

* I would’ve liked to know that gurus where expected to handle 3 chats during the interview process not during training. Not everyone can handle that stress. * Now that it’s growing so fast, it’s starting to have a more corporate feel to it. There is an obvious disconnect between execs and those lower. * Your success does somewhat depend on the team lead you’re working with and how willing they are to support you. That can be a good thing or a bad thing. * Probation is 6 months, for a job that’s this stressful I think it needs to be shorter to reduce turnover. * The perks you get are good but again you have to wait 6 months to get them. It’d be good if there was some form of mental health support for the amount of stress this job has (they do offer online counselling though). * The guru position should be hourly if you expect people to stay over time. At the beginning, people do about 2-3 hours of overtime at the least! I took a pay cut to work as a guru and was disappointed to learn how often I had to stay behind and finish up tickets. Gurus. * Booking days off is crucial for employees and it’s reallt hard to do unless it’s months in advance.

Hi and thanks for taking time to leave a review. I am glad you appreciate that we have some amazing people working here at Shopify. Shopify is a company who succeeds based on the effort of its many employees, and crucial to that success is the AMAZING Guru team who work directly with our merchants. Shopify puts huge value on the work that Gurus do. Whilst the Guru role can be one of the most rewarding in the company we appreciate that it can also be one of the most challenging, so we do appreciate feedback like your own and we are always looking for ways to make the experience better for the people who fill that role. One recent change is that Gurus are now able to access the Shopify perks immediately upon hire rather than having to wait. If an employee does find their role stressful, there are a variety of support options available. At a grassroots level we have a range of employee organized mental health community groups where you can connect with peers who may be experiencing the same issues. For additional support we also have the coaches network on staff to help develop personal and professional managing techniques. We also offer leave provisions for employees to deal with personal issues as well as the Employee Assistance Program you mentioned, which allows all employees to access professional mental health services whenever they are required. Thanks again for your review.
