Pros

Great opportunity to grow within the company in an exciting fast growing industry. Depending on your role there is work life balance. This particular role does not have work life balance.

Cons

Absolute unethical business practice in reference to compensation review and changes. This particular situation is unnerving: Individuals were hired internally; into a senior level role without change in title or compensation with no opportunity to evaluate. Creating a net new team in a power growth sector for Shopify. An exciting role that has grow to opportunities to be sure. However, the market value for the role is double what the internal hires are compensated. (whom received no compensation or title change). They were given no title/level change or compensation change; despite external hires coming in at double the salary for the same role. Leadership remains strong in their stance that opportunity for promotion/level/compensation change is once per year as per Shopify Structure during Performance Review period. However the increases that come during this review period are not sufficient enough to bring current employees at par with market value/new hires. Absolute bureaucracy blamed on ‘guiding principles’ and ‘corporate structure’ that has left this tea feeling humiliated and being taken advantage of.

Pros

Internal compensation tool. You can change your compensation base pay/stock ratio throughout the year and ride bear or bull markets appropriately. Compensation is also pretty good for a full remote company. Modern data stack, so your tooling is current. Recognizable company. The public has not caught on yet to how bureaucratic and slow moving Shopify is yet, so I was able to get another job quickly.

Cons

The work is fake. Giant, multi-month migration efforts where tens of thousands of lines of code are moved from repos in order to... rename tables in BigQuery. I am not exaggerating. Data leadership still found a way to design graphs and charts to show misleading amounts of storage and processing time cleanup. Despite many people understanding this was not real optimization, everybody clapped and gave congratulations emojis. Highly process oriented workflows. Building anything new requires satisfying an enormous set of arbitrary CI/CD rules that are not consistent and have small loopholes. End result is a brittle and bloated data infrastructure. People here wear ballcaps like it's a part of their uniform. Heavy Star Wars fandom. This is a red flag in any post high school environment and I wished it was expressed before I joined so I didn't have to learn so late.
