Pros

My journey at Shopify was fulfilled with growth and innovation. I found daily joy in contributing to its mission and groundbreaking product. Being an engineer here meant working at the industry's cutting edge. Furthermore, Shopify's commitment to Open Source Software (OSS) is laudable, with dedicated full-time maintainers enriching the ecosystem.

Cons

Over the last six years, certain critical aspects of Shopify have unfortunately deteriorated at a rapid pace. Leadership began to seem less receptive to engineering input, and priorities shifted frequently, which led to a fragile ecosystem that was increasingly challenging to maintain. Furthermore, the clarity regarding individual impact began to diminish. Regrettably, this sentiment is not solely mine but shared among various colleagues. Personally, it was disheartening to witness three engineers whom I had referred, leave the company due to these changes. Additionally, in recent years, work-life balance has skewed problematically towards work, contributing to stress and potential burnout among the team.

Pros

- It was THE place to be for Ruby engineers - Successful product that people genuinely love - The people are the best. Hands down.

Cons

- Cult-like mentality around the CEO - Shopify Logistics leadership was laughable, non-present and uninspiring. Drove us into the ground - layoffs, job insecurity

Pros

- Some teams are amazing (in terms of people and/or project/domain)

Cons

- Opposite to the pros, some teams are really bad (in terms of people and/or project). Is kinda luck where are you going to land. - Compensation is OKish. Don't expect high salaries. Shopify thinks that it is Amazon size, try to play as competitor, but pays easily 50% less. - Impact review is random. I worked for 3 years, I have around 4 impact reviews cycles, each of them was unique and random. - Top-down policy. Even your lead (and some times the lead of your lead) is at the dark all times. Things changes for no reason and no planning, in a very top-down manner. - Company thinks it is global, but it is badly managed. I had to work constant after hours to compensate and talk with team members spread around America, Europe and Asia. And if you don't do that? Well, wait for the impact review, as you will be slow, very slow on deliveries.
