Pros

Beautiful area to live in the warm seasons. Small Town Atmosphere. Low crime rates. Good schools on east side of county. Most of the rank & file are great people to work with. Employees have a union for protection.

Cons

Pay is not competitive (low) and there is an ideology of salary shaming. Schools on west side of county not ideal. Elected management is difficult/political, micro-manages, doesn't understand or care about department or community needs. Elected Auditor (in charge of paychecks) constant errors and complaints. Nearest functioning cities are 45 minutes away. Health plan is too expensive & employer cap is too low. County is always struggling with revenue due to size and management choices. Huge gap and odd structure with management salaries & rank/file salaries. Technology & mindsets way behind the times. Cell phone coverage is spotty at best. Internet service is slower and double/triple the cost (decent at county offices and there's a new IT chief). Lowest possible salary of most sectors within local government employment, nearby basic services are very limited, extremely high utility costs, high cost of living, high tax rates, high local gasoline prices, high basic grocery costs, very limited housing availability, etc. Management does not want to attract new business, community enhancement or any growth that would bother the ranchers who get preferential treatment in the area and lobby elected management, who in turn, make biased policy decisions which have an effect on employees quality of life at work and community.

Pros

Great people, small town charm, world-class scenery, relaxed working environment. Working for Sierra County is fun and rewarding. You work with friendly people who are your friends and neighbors. The culture is relaxed and you are allowed to work hard and contribute to the goals of the department. The work you do here can actually make a real difference in the lives of the local citizenry.

Cons

Underfunded schools, long distance from shopping centers, lack of restaurants and other conveniences of larger towns and cities, budgetary woes. The cons of working for Sierra County mainly revolve around the logistics of living there and the unfortunate financial realities of small jurisdictions in California. If you can look past certain difficulties, it is really a hidden gem.
