Hostile "family" environment

Pros

You will form trauma bonds with your co-workers over the mistreatment from management. Also, showrooms are often left without management presence, so you have plenty of time to search for a new job.

Cons

Family owned company, with an environment reminiscent of that toxic thanksgiving dinner where your crotchety uncle made a scene for no reason and made everything super tense and awkward. Team meetings are an excuse for management to shame employees for the mistakes of others, as well as a time to implement new fascist rules as punishment. Weekends and late nights are required and management pushes back when time off is requested regardless of the reason.

Pros

You will have access to a lot of great vendors and materials to work with. They have their own shop at Lami (parent company), which is great to utilize for custom projects and fixing damaged materials. Once you start earning commission, you have potential to make a good amount of money.

Cons

You are not paid on a job until the job starts and then again when the job is complete. It could take more than a year to start seeing commission. Nothing is transparent with your paychecks. You will never know how much you will make on a job until the job is completed. When you end up making less than expected, there is no explanation for why the job lost money or where it went. Company policies are created on the fly, and they change daily without notice. The handbook is given to you when you start, but nothing in it will apply to you. The employee turnover at this company is the highest I've ever seen. A customer might get handed off to 4 designers by the time their project is completed. As a designer, you will have to get mentally prepared to be the blame for every mistake being made on a job whether it was actually on you or not. There is no work/life balance.

Pros

Your very own office space the management will use from time to time.

Cons

Very little flexibility with having weekends off or holidays. Management is not supportive - which is mostly due to the high turnover rate that keeps them out the office to train new hires. Also, lack of training. Management has to float between their various showrooms to train the newest hire, that in depth training needed for the job never happens. Their pay structure is very shady. The verbage for whenever you are hired works out very differently than how you are actually paid. Also, good luck being paid. It may be upwards of a year before you are paid on a job...you do not get fully paid on a job until you the job is finished. Their parent company, Lami, refuses to update their ordering system which makes it impossible to communicate with customers about really anything. ETAs for products or install dates are not easily accessed and communication with customers is hardly ever effective.
