WRGT / WKEF...Good Place to Work

Pros

Good company culture at these 2 stations (in local television this can vary greatly from station to station within the same company); co-workers are, overall, very friendly and fun to work with; moved into a new building in 2013 and equipment is, overall, up-to-date. Good General Manager who maintains an open door policy and has done a very good job over the last few years transforming the two stations from being seriously dysfunctional to being a good place to work. Most Department Managers are great to work for.

Cons

News product is not competitive, a distant third in the market despite the recent investments; this is, IMHO, attributable to poor leadership of this particular department; the corporate "mothership" has tried to contain costs by streamlining many functions and hubbing them at headquarters in Baltimore; this has the effect, in many instances, of discouraging independent thinking and risk-taking that could yield genuine improvement. Finally, there is the challenge of trying to garner more viewers in an industry that is shrinking and consolidating, as eyeballs move away from "appointment" TV and towards streaming. Unfortunately, no one in this business has figured out how to monetize their content on the web to the point where it could replace on-air advertising. At some point the local TV news business will probably experience a "mass extinction" akin to what has already happened to the newspaper industry.

Pros

Good benefits, worked with some great people. Not really anything else positive to say about the company they could hire good people when they wanted to.

Cons

Everything else about the company; they put money into the wrong things, management is clueless, they push their political agenda through their TV stations, they promote butt kissers instead of hard working individuals.

Great job, terrible pay.

Pros

Coworkers are great. Atmosphere is dynamic. Vacation/sick & personal time is very competitive.

Cons

Local HR is horrendous. Sales management staff is poor and do not keep promises made. Total lack of training program. Pay is terrible. After consistent years of excellent work, stellar performance reviews, and taking on many additional duties, there has never been a raise other than cost of living annually, which is also far below the national cost of living average annual increase.
