Pros

Work life balance for family’s Many opportunities for training and community involvement if you have time People are nice

Cons

Too many requests to join other than direct work groups. Expect you to involve yourself other activities above and beyond the norm which has a direct influence on your bonus. They focus more on developing and promoting new employees than they do developing their more experienced employees for advancement. You can be pigeon holded and held back from advancing. If you don’t have time for all the extra things they want you to do it’s a hit on your performance. Many of my coworkers along with myself spent years trying to advance, but even if you make profits 30-40% and deliver a project greater than expected, if your not in their “pack” and you don’t get involved in other things (even if it means it will cause your work day, week month or year to be much longer) you will not advance. Upper management never follows thru on their promises to “check-in” and see how your doing. They perform their yearly reviews by going around at the end of the year and gathering info from other coworkers and looking at your training and extra community involvements. They don’t have a clue on how you perform on a day to day basis unless they ask other personnel or one of your PEs. There is no personal touch and place their reviews solely on others options. They never have a plan for your growth within the company. They ask but don’t respond very well. They do for young employees because that’s easy. It’s difficult for them to deal with the more experienced staff that are are out there making profit but are unable to meet the extra activity goals. All they say is you got to get more involved even if your already working 50-60 hour weeks. It’s their way of keeping them from having to promote you. They want you to find time in your day for this stuff while your trying to deliver a quality project that they also want from you. Lastly, they keep changing their project management platforms. Once you finally get good at the current one they change to another. It seems they are all over the place with direction since they promote innovation soo hard that people are just coming up with anything to stay relevant, even if it’s throughly thought out or not. Waste of time on much of it once they find out most of the ideals don’t work but you have to do it since it creates a venue for employee collaboration and getting to know each other. But, what it actually does is create a competitive atmosphere with many folks feeling exhausted with the effort. I see many PEs and PMs just give up which is a shame because they are the backbone of the company and who are actually out there doing the hard work dealing with the day to day project operations.

Pros

Skanska prides itself on its high safety standards. It has a long list of impressive projects and it’s a well known company. The pay is also pretty good.

Cons

Don’t expect to move up much unless you’re an engineer or you know alot of people. I came in with years of experience and a Master’s degree and was unfortunately laid off during Covid, despite working very hard in my role. My manager was largely unavailable and it seemed no one held her accountable for her transgressions at work. I really hope things have changed. Health insurance is expensive so I recommend negotiating a higher offer to offset the cost. They also don’t give much time off, but you can negotiate more.
