Pros

Peers are good folks who deliver good work.

Cons

Leadership is weak and sells crappy projects. Tons of lies about the work that you end up doing. No professional development and people seem happy to coast. Great place to work if you want to work for clients at bad companies.

This is John Tobin. In my experience, I have definitely seen consultants very involved in their staffing. If you want to share more with me regarding the what you experienced, simply email me at johnt@slalom.com to set up a time to talk. Pros

The office space is nice.

Cons

This company preaches client love, but I did not see any of that during my tenure at Slalom. The things that leadership would say behind the clients' back disgusted me. Of course they need your help and your expertise - that's why you're there! It's inappropriate to make comments such as "their mindset is still in the stone ages" or "they have no idea what they're talking about". It's our responsibility to help them improve and elevate their current processes. I worked at my previous consulting firm for over 7 years and I had never encountered such vile leadership with such a superiority complex. In terms of career, I was never placed in the role which I was promised during the interview process. They will say they try their best to place people in the right roles but don't be fooled. Slalom has a tough time competing with the Big 4; therefore, they've made their mark in a small number of the same roles. Also, don't expect to have work-life balance. I live in the city and commuted 3.5 hours a day to Deerfield for months on end without a WFH option. I spoke with my people manager about this, but she was too passive and didn't want to make waves, hence I was stuck without options.

This is John Tobin. I totally agree about your comments regarding our clients. We built Slalom based on a mutual respect with our clients and I remember seeing things like you describe in the consulting firms of the 90's. I will talk to the Chicago office about this, although I'm hopeful this was a fairly isolated incident or isolated individuals. Regarding WFH - this is now going to be pretty standard I think. And lastly, I only see us competing on an equal level with the larger consulting companies and often beating them especially on technology related projects - so I think you needed to give it more time there. If you would like to connect on anything you wrote above, don't hesitate to send me an email to schedule a time to talk - johnt@slalom.com. Pros

HR is very good at deceiving potential candidates about the types of projects they will work on. WFH and not too much travel (Client specific policy, not slaloms). You will be billable, just not on anything interesting or learn anything.

Cons

No 401K, Average PTO, Staff Aug, Stuck with projects that Big 4 doesn't want.

This is John Tobin. Seems like your stint at Slalom was pretty short - we match 50% on 401K (of your first 6%) and our PTO improves as your tenor here increases. Also - considering we go up against the Big4 and many other larger consulting companies often, I would not categorize this as work they do not want. That said, your experience must not have been great, so best of luck with your next gig.
