Worked for the agency for 10 years and climbed my way to my last position. I can honestly say the job is very stressful and definitely very political. I left because management changed and the new managers were very big on gaslighting; it wasn't worth my mental health anymore. I was fortunate to have worked with a manager previously who had a good moral compass and is part of the reason why I stayed as long as I did. You have to be willing to deal with a lot from the agency and managers in addition to the stress that comes with working directly with the public. Getting promoted is based on who likes you & who you know, at least from what I've witnessed. There are people in management roles who are clearly not competent enough to be leading an office. And there are overworked worker bees who deserve to be promoted based on their job knowledge, ability to manage work and interpersonal skills.

Cronyism, favoritism, fraud, waste, and abuse. Intimidation, harassment, bullying, targeting, and retaliation if you try to defend yourself. Over 90% of the time you only get promoted through subjective measures and if mgmt/director likes you. You have to be a "yes man" and do as you're told no matter what. HR is a joke and any investigation done by them due to the aforementioned is swept under the rug, even with proof; this includes sexual harassment. Your only option is to hire an attorney if you have the resources.
