Pros

Stable, 401K/TSP , multiple benefits, paid holidays. At the initial case level, you're able to talk to and really help people. At the second, or appeal level, you're also able to help people, but for the most part you're stuck reviewing cases and doing clean-up. At the third level of adjudication, or the administrative law judge and hearing level, you're working with lawyers for the most part who are just rude. Money grubbers who take a third of the claimants' benefits! Although by law, they cannot get paid unless the claimant wins, they don't tell them that! The lawyers make it seem like they're there for the claimants, when they're really not. I hated that about the third level of adjudication, and although it's not Social Security administration's problem, it should be publicized way more that attorneys, by law, are not allowed to claim any money unless a Social Security disability case is a win. Most of the attorneys I worked with Hardly did any work. All of the evidence collecting, advocating for the claimants, and sharing that all the documents and medical appointments for up-to-date so that a decision could be made, were done by me, the actual adjudicator! The attorneys did nothing, and for the most part would be just a stumbling block between actually talking to the person who filed the claim.

Cons

Overworked! Caseloads in the hundreds come in, with thousands of pages of medical evidence, in addition to work history, questionnaires, and new evidence. Examiners are not given sufficient time to review cases. Moreover, pay at the first level of adjudication is very poor, compared with what the third level of adjudication earns, despite the first level of adjudication being much harder. Worked there for years, at state and federal levels, and working for the state is probably the worst deal.
