Very 1960's place to work

Pros

Some really talented engineers and pipeline people. Some great people come to work there but the best and brightest leave pretty quickly.

Cons

The lip service to the "values" are hollow as the HR executives break the very HR rules they espouse and expect others to abide by (and that's the top executive of HR, no less). For a publicly traded company, I was surprised by the heavier focus on wining and dining regulators than focusing on growing employee productivity and shareholder value. NOT a truly diverse company which is a standout in the South.

Pros

Seriously great people working at this company. Family atmosphere. Relaxed, low pressure working environment. Great benefits. You become very familiar with an industry that many people take for granted. Lots of different areas to work in and you are encouraged to try new things. Made some great friends working here.

Cons

I left about a year ago and it came down to just feeling stifled in my job. There was a hiring freeze and "cost containment" i.e no training budget. I wasn't really feeling challenged in my job and my skills were getting stale. Combine that with the fact that pay is just perfectly average. Promotions are very hard to come by, and you get caught up in the HR grinder that happens at many huge companies. You have no idea if you are doing what you need to do to advance or not. Looking back, leaving was the right decision.

Run in circles...

Pros

The company is growing their nuclear fleet.

Cons

Unfortunately, the culture is more about who you know rather than what you know. There are many professionals holding positions where they are unqualified and inexperienced. In many situations people are promoted or 're-orged' into higher positions due to their relationships with management. It is quite common to have a supervisor or manager that is more skilled on self-promotion and protecting their positions rather than the work itself. Promotion, recognition, and evaluations are rated subjectively. Retaliation is an art. Best advice, keep all personal opinions to oneself and make friends with people outside of the company.
