Pros

You want to live in Birmingham, AL or the deep south. There is a good amount of travel if needed. Once you leave work, you are then done for the day and weekend, you hardly ever will be called in again unless there is an emergency or something extraordinarily rare.

Cons

You are in a very conservative part of the country. There is a lack of challenging work for employees to avoid boredom. You are given monotonous tasks that you have done in 30 minutes, but you must extend them out by a few days because you would be bored otherwise.

Pros

I think the work enviroment at Southern Company is great. Evrybody is nice and respectful. Managers and supervisors are interested in employes not only on a work level, but also in a personal level. They understand when employes need to take care of personal matters. They are also good recognizing when employees do a good job. The benefits are great, better than most companies I know, they match up to 6% of the 401K and have good health benefits. Managers and supervisors are open to listen employees with any concerns and willing to solve any problems. THe buildings and facilities are also nice.

Cons

Some times the promotios are different for some people and it seems like it is easier to move up for some. There is people who is been working harder and for longer time and don't get the same promotions. That seems to be unfair, specially when some people is doing a great job that is very important for the company and don't get a promotion, while someone else who is doing just a good job and has been in the company half of the time gets the promotion. The rules about how promotions are granted are not clear to anyone.

Pros

Southern places a lot of emphasis on continuing education. There are several opportunities to learn about the company and how it produces revenue. Southern is totally committed to its employees and values them and their communities. In fact community involvement is an unspoken requirement for management positions. The pay is also a great reason to work for Southern.

Cons

Southern is a highly regulated business and therefore can be a bit beurocratic for my tastes. Meaning the organization is highly structured and there are set ways to do things. Not the place for "freespirits" the company demands teamwork on all projects.
