Pros

Every day you go to work and work with some of the smartest but also hard working, do-anything-to-get-to-mars coworkers you can find anywhere. Every day you are pushed to do things faster, cheaper, but still smarter than anyone has ever done them before. The challenge is addicting and something you will find pretty much nowhere else. Young company full of energy and coworkers that will inspire and motivate you. Any top engineer's dream place to work. Also, great healthcare, gym reimbursement, food subsidies, and stock compensation. For hourly employees, overtime opportunities abound and mean you can make top dollar if you're willing to put in the hours.

Cons

Base pay is lower than it is at a lot of competitors for employees at SpaceX for several years (starting salaries are quite competitive). Salaried employees end up working a ridiculous amount of hours in many cases. I have worked for weeks on end between 70 and 85 hours, though I would say on average employees mostly work between 50 and 60 hours, which is quite typical for a tech company. It is very hard to afford to live in southern california and have a family with the salary and work hours at SpaceX. Definitely hard to retain employees after 5 years given that pay is often far less than competitors if you are salaried and work/life balance can be very tough. Despite all of the above, which can be fixed as time goes on, you will not find a more exciting or interesting company to work for. Every year is more exciting, pushing the impossible and doing what most others believed would not happen in their lifetimes. Sometimes, doing incredible work requires sacrifice. If you believe in the mission, the hard work can be worth it, and if you are a valuable employee you can learn to be efficient and improve your work/life balance to be quite reasonable. If you hate southern california, we have exciting work happening in Seattle, Texas, Vandenberg AFB (Santa Barbara area), Cape Canaveral FL, and washington DC.

Pros

You're surrounded by peers whose day to day effort is a constant reminder to step up your game. If you're at all attentive to what's going on around you, you can't help but be driven to improvement. This is not the place where you cruise along at the top of the pile. The goals, the excitement, the accountability ... they're all shared experiences among the team. While the effort to reach each milestone towards the company mission is tough, we're actually making progress faster than any other competitor in the market. The compensation is reasonable and the stock options are awesome. Highly rated employees (annual reviews) are often awarded additional stock options for their efforts.

Cons

There isn't a career path that you don't create yourself. So, for many that doesn't sound very appealing. However, think it over. As much of a con that you may consider it, you're also in control. You can easily convert this con into a pro. Work life balance truly sucks. If you've got a significant other, you'd better make sure that they are on-board with this job as it's going to be a time suck. You simply cannot put yourself on cruise control. Our goals are not insignificant, so the majority of them are not yet realized. This means that every success is followed by the next need on the path to achieving the company mission. Get used to that idea and prepare yourself to look at a series of achievement on the way to an over-arching goal.

Pros

Elon advertises his goals, then he executes. Doubters to date has been proven wrong. We plan to transform humanity into a space-faring civilization, starting with the colonization of Mars. In my view, working at SpaceX is a once-in-the-history-of-civilization opportunity. Exciting, fast-paced, and stimulating work environment. I love my job. Highest caliber people I have ever worked with. Rockets, spaceships, massive R&D. SpaceX is a tech paradise. Excellent compensation when factoring in equity and benefits. Responsibility, accountability, and authority are pushed down to the lowest level possible. Awesome parties. Great food.

Cons

Maintaining work/life balance requires a conscious choice every day. I used to be limited only by my own ability to execute. As SpaceX has grown, our business practices have gotten in the way of individual contribution. (competition between R&D and production, more management layers, larger teams with difficult communication pathways) Southern California isn't for everybody. (traffic, housing costs, taxes, pollution)
