Pros

Beautiful campus, great town, smart engaged students, supportive administration, teach-abroad opportunities, and friendly atmosphere (and no snow)

Cons

4/4 teaching load plus committee-work, student advising, and "not-required but strongly recommended" extra-curriculars leave little time for research, self-development, any outside interests, or sleep. Promotion and tenure issues are problematic.

It's not like it used to be

Pros

Most of the employees (faculty and staff) here are really good people. Tuition remission benefits for yourself, spouse, and dependents that cover the full cost of classes. Depending on the office or department you work in, there is good work-life balance. Pay is not amazing, but is better than many places. Good health benefits and excellent retirement plan.

Cons

As a few other reviewers have noted, in the past 5 years or so the university has hired a new wave of upper level administrators. Many of these people (not all, but a good number of them) have driven away some great people who were clearly assets to the university. A lot of changes are being forced on the faculty, staff, and students, not for the betterment of the institution but for the purpose of increasing the reputation of the individual. It feels like SEU is being used as a springboard for these people to say, "look at all these changes I made at St. Edward's! Now hire me at your bigger better fancier school so I can get more $$$!!" before leaving us high and dry. We're all watching it happen and sadly there's nothing we can do about it...and it's very discouraging.
