Pros

Family friendly Work / life balance Excellent pay and benefits Excellent work atmosphere Very skilled and talented technical workforce Plenty of opportunity for advancement and careers to choose from

Cons

The corporate culture within State Farm confuses management with leadership. There are very few real leaders within senior management that people would willingly follow. Although there are certainly some great leaders, they are unfortunately the exception. Senior management will never own up to a bad decision. As a result, it creates an atmosphere where it's not ok to make mistakes and learn from them. Too many managers and directors don't understand the work they oversee.

Pros

Great long term compensation, great public awareness, great effort put into doing the right thing. State Farm gets it right in approaching the industry as a corporation with a "community" approach. The philanthropy that State Farm supports is wonderful. Good "optics". Highly rated employer for minorities.

Cons

There is a vast disconnect in the vision in Bloomington , IL (HQ) and the first line management in ALL branches. In claims, the promotional opportunities are not given to those that are leaders, but to those that study books from The American College. There is a lack of ability to identify, develop, and promote individuals that have the courage and ability to be great leaders. Promotional opportunities are given to those that "play the game".

Pros

I worked for an independent agent so experiences wiil vary.

Cons

Agency contract is not as lucrative as it used to be. 15-20 years ago it was unheard of for an agent to "go out of business". Now they are dropping like flies. If they can actually write 40 cars a month of new business, they are at work from 7am to 7pm...i doubt if that's why any of them actually went into business for themselves in the first place.
