Pros

It is the best insurance company with the best claims service in the nation. We kind be confident that State Farm will be fair and usually take care of the customers claims in a timely and fair manner. We have many good products from auto, fire, life and health along with banking to take care of most every need. I wouldn't feel comfortable selling insurance for a company that I didn't believe would stand behind their products or be able to take care of them. Since State Farm has been conservative in most of its decisions, we are not one of the companies that are going under like so many at this point in time.

Cons

Everything has changed from taking care of the customer to only being concerned with writing new business.

Pros

State Farm Agents are independent contractors and therefore their staff are not State Farm Corporate employees. Although I would say that the State Farm name is universally recognized and many people trust State Farm to protect their families, which helps retain business when times are tough and the competetion is vicious.

Cons

I worked for an Agent, so technically I was not an empoyee of State Farm, I was an employee of the Agent. That being said, every Agent runs their business differently- there can be great agents to work for and there can be less stellar ones. Unfortunately I had the latter. It was a new-market agency, meaning no existing clients. Every policy written in the first 6 months was basically raw new business. Because of the startup costs, my employer had a very unappealing compensation package given their circumstances. Few people would want to be only commission-paid at an unestablished agency, which we were. Also, there are no benefits offered at all. Again though, all agencies will offer different compensation and benefit packages. All in all, I took a position in another industry that pays properly for my education and skill level, and my insurance selling days are over.
