Pros

recession proof industry, have to literally try to get fired

Cons

Very political and people are not promoted on merit. Most managers do not have any experience working the job they are managing so they are not a source of guidance. This is very frustrating for seasoned employees who are more qualified than their management. If you are not a minority (particularly a white male) promotion is extremely difficult. Women and minorities are extremely favored.

Pros

Great first job if you have little or no experience and have no clue what you are doing. They will train you to function they way they want. They offer decent move plans for employees who are relocated. The 401K plan was a match up to $1200. If you ever needed insurance they would be right there with a quote.

Cons

Very conservative company and they pay you that way - very conservatively... Had I known what I know now I would have left this employer much earlier in my career. You have to be ready to reapply for your job in order to stay in your position. They current job you hold means nothing if they choose to relocate that service to another office or state. Years of service really means nothing to them. The tried to reorganize and pay for high performers but this resulted in everyone still getting paid the same raises every year.

Pros

It is a growing company and is still an industry leader. From agencies to the corporate offices in Bloomington, everyone is focused on taking care of the customer. When you work for State Farm you know you are representing the best name in insurance.

Cons

The only downside is that there is a lot of friendly competition among agents. There are many agents in big cities and sometimes it feels like there are too many. However, this could be viewed as an advantage because it keeps you on your toes and pushes you to be great.
