Pros

Challenging work, good benefits and great people. They tend to have plenty of opportunities for those individual looking to advance in their careers, but you have to be willing to work for it.

Cons

When I first started there the work life balance was terrible but has been improving over the past two years. To be honest, at first I didn't mind it because I was eligible for OT but once I became a salaried employee, my direct reports were making more than I was during our peak production periods which seemed to be every other month..

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. We know how important internal mobility is to our employees, as well as the success of our organization, so I’m glad to hear you believe there are opportunities to advance your career at State Street. I’m also pleased to hear you say that you’ve experienced an improvement in work/life balance. This has been a focus of ours over the last few years. If you aren’t already a part, I’d encourage you to check out the Flex Work Employee Network (which was recently recognized as one of the best Employee Resource Groups in the nation!). You might learn something new that you can apply to your career or tips on how to help your employees find balance, too. -Hazel Keating, SVP, Talent Development

Pros

Flexible work arrangement available to most

Cons

Hierarchical. Inauthentic HR leaders paying lip service to the programs that HR creates for the company like Listening and Challenging debate and Diversity. Lack of leadership skills from EVP and SVPs. "Leaders" lacking sense of how HR really feels. Bad overall HR culture.

Pros

The remaining staff have some quality people among them but they are few and far between. Five weeks vacation was good.

Cons

No work life balance. Morale couldn't be lower due to constant layoffs, heavy workloads, pissed off clients who berate you for mistakes made by COE and offshoring folks but you are forbidden to mention their existence so you just have to take apologize again and again. You might get good performance reviews but it will neither translate into a decent raise, bonus or shelter you from being laid off and walked out like a criminal. State Street was an amazing quality employer in the 80's & 90's but the leadership since Marsh Carter retired has been focused solely on cutting costs instead of growing income (this is what happens when bean counters are promoted to CEO).
