Pros

The benefits are amazing, I work in the benefits area and we have some of the best healthcare around. You get a raise every year on your anniversary, plus usually a cost of living increase when the union covered employees do. Once you're here for 6 months and pass your probationary period, it's a pretty stable job with few threats of losing your job.

Cons

With government when a new administration comes in, everything changes. Expect to go where the wind is blowing for those 4 years. New administrations bring in new directors who may not understand how your area functions and they make decisions based on their private sector experience which doesn't always translate to the public sector.
