Useful First Job for Government Relations

Pros

If you're out of college and interested in breaking into the Government Relations space in DC, Stateside is a good first start. You learn a lot, usually can specialize in a particular policy issue (energy, taxes, finance, etc etc), and you can make good connections, Most people who left have gone on to solid careers and positions in GR.

Cons

Diminishing returns for staying at the company beyond 2-3 years, especially if you do not receive a promotion. Because many people understand this, turnover is high.

They give you free food sometimes.

Cons

Low salary, bad work-life balance. Management doesn’t care about you. Experiences can vary wildly based on what team you’re on - life can be pretty easy if you’re on a team with less volume or on fire 24/7 if you’re not. No effort made by management to balance the workload between teams.

Working to 6pm in the winter. High Volume of day-to-day tasks.
