Good Ol' Boy System

Pros

The benefits are great through this company. From the stock compensation, insurance, 401K match, and pay.

Cons

Where to begin... this particular division is structurally unsound. We continue to hire metallurgist to manage when they lack the managerial skills necessary to help us excel as a firm. There is no feedback for employees to inform them how to better their over-all performance. This would allow them to make themselves promotable and beneficial to the processes of the company. The "Good Ol' Boy System", has led this division to having several individuals in positions they're not qualified for or deserving. Inadequate performance often leads to a promotion or lateral move. Superiors take it upon themselves to make changes in the processes without discussing with those interacting with equipment or operating procedures on a day to day basis. COMMUNICATION- it doesn't exist.

Pros

Successful, stable company which provides high-quality steel products. I am proud of working here. Management is open for new ideas and new visions. It is OK and desirable to speak and be heard. Absence of time cards. Comfortable private offices, one room per employee. Outstanding production bonuses and stock rewards. Comprehensive, but cheap medical insurance. Generous 401K plan matched contributions.

Cons

If you make a mistake, management will not penalize you. If you work hard, management will not notice either. There is an old archaic software system in place called One-Vision, which is outdated and is a source of many problems in all departments. The programming technology is not widely known among IT professionals, called SAP PowerBuilder. The company is understaffed on IT personnel, which means higher workload on each employee. Under these conditions base salary could be higher than 60K a year.
