Pros

- It was close to home, so the commute wasn't an issue - Taught me that it's not how hard you work but who you know

Cons

- Manager didn't care at all, was just trying to reach retirement so left everyone else to pick up the slack. - Manager was unstable war vet who constantly talked about how he wanted to hurt people and how awesome he was in Vietnam. - Upper management of produce hired his friend who had absolutely no clue what he was doing and promoted him over experienced workers. - When everyone in my department quit, I was forced into a management position with no training and absolutely no increase in wage. (what kind of manager makes $9.00 an hour?) When I told them this was unacceptable they told me to deal with it or find another job. I found another job. - Busted my butt for seven years and had absolutely nothing to show for it.

Pros

Union store. Flexible scheduling. Many nice co-workers and customers. Some of the managers are nice Some part-timers can get health insurance after they have been there for 2 years.

Cons

Company has gone downhill since new company president Ken Diehl took over. Very unorganized these days and the store is not as clean as it used to be. Not enough hours for a lot of us. Union UFCW 881 is a joke and they have not helped its members very much. Most SVT hourly employees get paid way less than Walmart and Target employees. Many UFCW union members make less than $8 an hour. Cedar lake SVT has been without a new contract for almost two years. UFCW has done a very poor job with keeping its members informed about our contract status. Utility clerks are not eligible for health insurance even though they have to outside a lot in bad weather.

Horrible Company to Work For

Pros

Co-workers who are below management are wonderful people.

Cons

Management is condescending and lacks interpersonal skills, Company doesn't respect employees and fibs about being a "family oriented business" and does not value it's employees, does not pay based off experience as advertised (everyone starts off at same rate), works you 6 days a week yet you barely reach 30 hours in that 6 days
