Pros

Great opportunities to connect people to nature. Useful training opportunities. Estabished organization with a lot of supporters.

Cons

Very East Coast centric and a holdover from the "keep wilderness wild at all costs" school of thought, without enough understanding of how urban youth and others may not share that same priority but still can connect with nature in various ways.

Pros

What's not to like about the mission? Youth, environment, work experience. A lot of great people - staff and interns - who are mission-aligned and have big hearts. The organization has deep history and has accomplished a tremendous amount.

Cons

The leadership was isolated in a rural part of the US and consequently was not able to embrace quickly enough the importance of having staff and policies/programs that reflected the urban communities it served. It's catching up in some ways but in many ways it was too late--and they lost a lot of the committed, innovative young professionals who reflect the diversity of our US cities and the youth we served.
