Loved SCA as a participant, stopped loving it as an employee

Pros

Great for high school and college students looking for a way to gain experience in their chosen field, make connections to land management agencies, and live in the woods.

Cons

-Real leadership is non-existent. The CEO is incapable of making a decision on his own. -This is a true good ole white boys organization. Very authoritarian and top -> down structure where everyone is kept in their place, especially the women. -The worst managers have not only been retained but promoted. The good managers have to constantly protect their area from damage from above. -False sense of self-importance is part of the culture here - about the significance of the organization itself - its history and founder - on down to managers who think they are a much bigger deal than they really are. -"The SCA Way" - starts a joke but quickly becomes a living hell.

Poor oversight, top-heavy, culture of defensiveness, understaffed.

Pros

Excellent PTO- plus opportunities to accrue Alternative Transportation days, etc. Endless off-job-description tasks mean you can build up your skill set. Not too terrible if you're a temporary staff member (crew leader or intern)-- but don't expect to be treated well if you're hired on.

Cons

Where do I even start? Total lack of accountability from the top down-- discussed projects and initiatives never materialize. Way, way, way too many mid-level managers, none of whom are ever let go, even when their performance has been terrible. Staff at the ground level continuously have other people's work dumped on them. Outdated program model, which they stubbornly cling to as they lose money and staff, instead of putting resources into new ventures. Many cuts over the past 5 years, and more to come if the culture of defensiveness and fear of change aren't addressed. Very poor training/support. Health benefits are very expensive for coverage that isn't that great.
