I have worked in retail leadership for years, and this was one of the most frustrating and disappointing management experiences of my career. From the moment I joined the company, I was expected to take over a store with existing operational issues, staffing shortages, and performance challenges that I did not create. Despite inheriting these problems, I received minimal training and was expected to deliver immediate results. Instead of being developed as a leader, I was left to navigate complex situations with little guidance. To make matters worse, the district manager who hired me went on a leave of absence shortly after I started, and around the same time, the regional coach—who had been closely involved in the market—also left. Whether intentional or not, the result was that the leadership responsible for bringing me into the company was suddenly gone, leaving me without the consistency, mentorship, and support that had been promised. It felt like I was abandoned at one of the most critical points of my onboarding and ultimately set up to fail. The most discouraging part of my experience came when I was demoted. I was never given what I believed was a fair opportunity to address concerns through a meaningful performance improvement process or collaborative discussion. The decision appeared to have already been made before I had the chance to fully respond. Adding insult to injury, I was expected to train the individual who would be replacing me while my responsibilities and system access were gradually transferred away. Watching that unfold after dedicating myself to the business was incredibly demoralizing and, in my opinion, showed very little respect for my efforts. The frontline associates are hardworking and deserve far better leadership than what they receive. Unfortunately, the company failed where it matters most: onboarding, manager development, communication, and leadership accountability. If you’re considering a management position, be prepared to inherit problems you didn’t create, receive limited training, and be held responsible for circumstances well beyond your control. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Sunglass Hut as a place to build a long-term management career.
