Leadership is almost inexistent. Middle management is clinging to their jobs without any ambitions or vision, unwilling to take any risk spending most of their time to please their superiors. Too many line managers are micromanagers and administrators.
If you want to have a career, develop a network, even the kind which isn't relevant to your job, and a network with higher rank people, unless your position is very exposed.
Most people developing a career are working for themselves, do what looks good, not what is the best for the company.
