Pros

The Good: Executive leadership actually cares and listens. Insurance products are easy to "sell" because of they actually live up to their value propositions. Incredible Customer Service so one can focus on selling and not putting out fires. Multi-person approach, meaning you will not be left to fend for yourself throughout the entire sales process, i.e. quote specialist helps organize requests for proposals, manager and team help you review opportunities, stop loss partners help you get in the door at insurance firms, implementation process is managed by implementation manager after sales person submits the sold case notification. Back to focusing on selling.

Cons

The Bad: The company provides the same great service for employers from the small market, mid-market, to large market; therefore, Symetra limits going after smaller groups with less premium. Their underwriting department is picky. The job requires a decent amount of travel (out of state for most reps) and remote work making it a lonely job at times. The Ugly: Who the heck is Symetra? You will have to be memorable because your broker partners will forget your company's name. Prospects often choose a competitor instead of Symetra because their brand name isn't big enough.

Thank you for this detailed five-star review. Our customer service and sales support teams do an amazing job. Symetra still has work to do to improve our brand recognition in the market, but we’ve seen some significant progress in that area, as evidenced by 10% increase in brand awareness according to a brand study done earlier this year. I appreciate the feedback and suggestion regarding the cadence of national sales updates and will incorporate that in 2023.

Pros

Co-workers are smart, helpful and teams have a close knit culture Benefits are amazing and are really reflective of Symetra’s core values. It’s one thing for a company to say they care about their employees and another to actually show in so many aspects including benefits and development opportunities. Symetra is extremely customer and client focused. I’ve worked for a total of 3 other carriers in STD and Symetra goes above and beyond to walk employees through the plan, ask detailed questions, provide decisions quick and do the right thing. I’ve never worked anywhere so customer focused. Case managers are given many opportunities to learn more about the business, actually deep knowledge about how to do their job efficiently and are provided opportunities to develop, collaborate, have a voice and take much needed time away. It’s not a giant insurance company where you feel like a number and you’re just typing information to process claims. They challenge you to think, interpret and be responsible for the work you put out

Cons

My former department has gone through a ton of change and is still finding their way. Everyone is dedicated and super innovative but overall, the focus has shifted from some of leadership being super accessible for questions or to help problem solve with CMs directly to more being focused on ways to improve productivity outside of hiring. There’s now more distance and disconnect from the leadership team and direct line employees more than ever as leadership is kind of put on a pedestal.

Thank you for sharing this detailed five-star review. Your comments reflect several of the great aspects of our culture — one that is built on our core values that are deeply rooted in everything we do. I also appreciate your constructive comments and advice. Though it may have felt to you that leadership is put on a pedestal, I’ve always tried to be accessible and open to discussions with all employees — and expect the same of every leader here at Symetra. I’m sorry to read that you’re no longer with the company, but appreciate your contributions to our success.

Pros

Not sure I have one. Toxic work environment!

Cons

This is not a sales organization. On LAD side of the house there is no strategy to sell and management is not looking to help the sales reps. Management, underwriting, and internal operations have little no knowledge of how the broker market has actually changed and they are not willing to change with the times. They do not want to change to fit the market they want the market to fit them.
